the Snowthorn; the spear of Gil-galad

objectaeglosspeargil galad

Name and Deed

Aeglos (Sindarin ‘Snowthorn’) was the tall spear of Gil-galad the High King of the Noldor; its name sang of the ice-thorns of winter, and even so bright a spear of light it was, the terror of Orcs and of the servants of the Shadow among the hosts of the Last Alliance.

The Duel

In the last battle Gil-galad fought with Sauron with the spear Aeglos and with fire he was burned, and the spear was broken with the king’s fall upon the slopes of Orodruin, when Isildur cut the Ring from the Dark Lord’s hand.
