Names

Amon Ereb, the Lonely Hill (‘‘ereb’’, “isolated”), is the name of the easternmost hill of the south of East Beleriand.

Geography

A broad, shallow-sided hill that stood alone, Amon Ereb dominated the southern plains of East Beleriand. It was the easternmost and highest hill of the Andram, the Long Wall, and stood within sight of the Gelion; from it the passage around the Andram into the south of East Beleriand and toward the northern woods of Taur-im-Duinath could be guarded.

History

Amon Ereb was held of old by the Nandor: in the First Battle Denethor, king of the Laiquendi, was cut off upon it and slain. After the Dagor Bragollach it was fortified by Caranthir as a refuge for his departing hosts; and when the Nirnaeth Arnoediad was lost, the Sons of Fëanor gathered the remnant of their people there. At the last, when Morgoth’s power swept all the north, Maedhros and Maglor were driven from the hill down to the Isle of Balar.
