Name and Position

Anairë — the wife of the High King Fingolfin, daughter of an old Noldorin house, and mother of Fingon, Turgon, Aredhel and Argon. She is named only in the genealogies of the Quenta (“Anairë, the wife of Fingolfin”), for she did not go into exile: like Nerdanel (her opposite number among the Fëanorians), she remained in Aman when her husband and sons departed.

In the Tale

Anairë’s absence is one of those silent structural facts of the mythology: the mothers of the two great houses stay behind, and because of it the whole household drama of the Noldor is played out without them.

Their names survive as the unanswered question of the dissolution of the Noldor

— the wives who would not follow, and whose sorrow (like that of Nerdanel) hangs unspoken over the exile. Tolkien’s later texts (in Morgoth’s Ring) meditate on such separations; in the published Silmarillion Anairë remains a name and a grief.
