Names

Ascar, of the sense “rushing”, “impetuous”, was the name of one of the rivers of Ossiriand; after the treasure of Doriath was sunk in its bed it was called Rathlóriel, the Goldenbed.

Geography

The Ascar was the northernmost of the rivers of Ossiriand. It rose near Dolmed in the Ered Luin and ran west until it joined the Gelion at the ford of Sarn Athrad; the Dwarf-road from the Blue Mountains lay along its northern bank.

History

After the murder of Thingol, the Dwarves of Nogrod marched along the Ascar laden with the spoil of Menegroth. At the ford of Sarn Athrad they were waylaid by Beren and the Green-elves of Ossiriand; the Dwarves were slain, and the treasure they had carried was cast into the river. From that time the Ascar was called Rathlóriel, the Goldenbed.
