Mickleburg; the sister-mansion of Nogrod

Name and Position

Belegost — “Mickleburg” (the Great Fortress), in Khuzdul Gabilgathol — is the second of the great Dwarf-mansions of the Ered Luin (with its sister Nogrod): a vast city of halls and smithies — the oldest of the eastern Dwarf-homes, whose folk were — the friends of the Elves of Beleriand in the age of the Menegroth-building.

The Deeds

With Nogrod it delved the Thousand Caves of Menegroth for King Thingol (in the age’s great Elvish-Dwarfish cooperation); its smiths and their war-masks (the “masks of the Dwarves”) were famous.

  • In the wars: The Dwarves of Belegost fought against the Orcs and the Dragon Glaurung in the battles of the age (the “Dwarf-masks” that withstood the dragon — the detail: the Dwarves of Belegost alone), and their kindred survived the age (returning to the mountains; their descendants, the Firebeards and the Broadbeams, were the ancestors of the later southern Dwarves).

Significance

Belegost (with Nogrod) is the emblem of the Dwarves of the First Age — the enduring, craftful, defensive kindred whose friendship (and later greed) with the Elves shaped both the great build-time and the ruin of Doriath.
