The Battle

Dagor-nuin-Giliath — “the Battle-under-Stars” — is the first battle of the Noldor against Morgoth, fought in the utter darkness of the first year of the age, beneath the starlight (for the sun had not yet risen): — the Quenta: and — Fëanor’s host, landing far north, at once made war on the orc-armies, and — the orcs of the whole North were driven in ruin, the first Day of the Noldor’s wrath was won.

The Turning

  • The overbold pursuit: In victory, Fëanor pursued the vanquished folly to the very gates of Angband — and there the balrogs came out and overwhelmed the over-far host.
  • The death of Fëanor: — mortally wounded by the balrogs (and, in the fullest account, slain in stroke-for-stroke with the Lord of Balrogs Gothmog — versions differ on the exact hand), Fëanor died beneath the mountain — “and his spirit departed to the halls of Mandos” — the battle at once the triumph and the first great loss of the exiled house.

Significance

The Battle-under-Stars founds the pattern of the entire age: the Noldor’s victories and their pride — the burning of the ships, the battle won, and the overreach that killed their maker-king; it is the opening music of the wars that run from the first sunrise to the War of Wrath.
