Eriol
the Wanderer; the hearer of the Lost Tales
Name and Story
Eriol, “the Wanderer”, is the mortal mariner of the earliest frame-story: a sea-farer who came at last to Tol Eressëa (the Lonely Isle) and there at the Cottage of Lost Play was told by the Eldar the great tales of their past — the cosmogony and histories that became the Book of Lost Tales. He is the mythology’s “first listener”, by whose hearing the old stories were preserved to be told again.
