Estë the Gentle
Names and Title
Estë — “the Gentle”, the Lady of Pity and Healing. She is wife of Irmo (Lórien) and dwells with him in the Fountains and gardens of Valinor.
Dominion and Character
Of her the Valaquenta says: “Estë the gentle… heals the hurts and weariness of the world. Estë sleeps in Lórien upon the island among the reeds, and her givers are happy… she giveth rest and sleep to all who are weary.”
Her name means “rest”; her element is the silken water-side drowsing of the garden, “grey and green and golden”. She is the Vala of recuperation: of sleep without dream, of healing of wounds both of body and of spirit, of the long patience in which the sorrows of the First Age are mended. Her handmaidens are said to bring comfort to the hurt, “and even the sorrow of the Death of the Trees was in part assuaged by her presence”. She is one of the Valar who, in the earliest tales, tended the fountains that “restored the world after the Great Dark”; her power of refreshment underlies the otherwise bleak endurance of the exiled Noldor who ever looked westward to the fountains of her garden.
In the Texts
She appears principally in the Valaquenta and on the margins of the Quenta; Tolkien’s later essays couple her with Irmo as the pair who guard the “healing of the mind”, opposed in effect to the harsh counsels of Mandos. Christopher Tolkien notes her among the Valier whose function is “healing and rest” rather than action in the narrative.
