Names

Lake Helevorn, in Sindarin “Black Glass”, is the name of the deep mountain-shaded lake of the north-east of Beleriand.

Geography

The lake lay in the north of Thargelion, at the foot of Mount Rerir in the Ered Luin; a stream flowed from its south-west corner into the Greater Gelion.

History

After the return of the Noldor the people of Caranthir dwelt about the lake and its northern marches. Its waters were defiled by the Orcs during the Dagor Bragollach; and in the War of Wrath the lake was destroyed with Mount Rerir, though part of it survived the drowning.
