Nerdanel
the wise; the wife of Fëanor; mother of the seven sons
Name and Nature
Nerdanel — “the Wise”, daughter of a Noldorin sculptor of Valinor; the wife of Fëanor and mother of his seven sons. She was a sculptor of great skill in her own right — “in those days the most renowned of the women of the Noldor” — and, uniquely among the Noldorin women, she was known for wisdom and patience; it is said she was the only one who could still the fierce flame of Fëanor in his anger.
Marriage and Family
The Quenta presents their marriage as the great union of equals: “Nerdanel… was of strong mind and will… and her counsel Fëanor would accept” — her temper served as the counterweight to his pride for many years; their seven sons (laid out under House of Fëanor) were the fruit of that union.
- The estrangement: As Fëanor’s pride hardened (during the feud and after his exile to Formenos), “Nerdanel perceived that his will was not the same” — she refused to follow him when he rebelled against the Valar, and remained in Aman. The Quenta: — she “for the most part drew away from him” and — she is the only one of Finwë’s family who did not go out with the Noldor.
Her
Sons Only Nerdanel’s sons (unlike all the other Noldorin mothers) went into exile; and none of them
— save through Maglor’s kindness — begat grandchildren in Middle-earth, so her line in the First Age ended with the death of the last of them. Tolkien’s later genealogies (in The Shaping of Middle-earth and Morgoth’s Ring) wrestle with her silence: the wise mother, left behind to outlive every child.
Significance
Nerdanel is one of the few Elvish women whose wisdom is named as a political counterweight — the “conscience” of the Fëanorians — and her inability to hold Fëanor back is part of the tragedy: even the one who could quench his fire could not bend his fate. Her shadow falls across the whole history of the house she could not save.
