the Worm of the Ered Mithrin; Fram's dragon-hoard
Name and Being
Scatha — “the Worm of the Ered Mithrin” — is one of the great dragons of the later age, a cold-drake (of the breed that, unlike the fire-drakes, breathed no flame but used guile and iron strength and the mountains’ chains). In the northern lands the dragon-hoards of the Ered Mithrin (the Grey Mountains) lay in her keeping, “the treasure of the worms”.
The Slaying
- Her death is told in the histories of the Men of the North: Fram, the lord of the Éothéod, slew Scatha and took her hoard; the treasure of the worm passed (in legend) into the matters of the later kings — “the gold of Scatha” echoes in the songs of the Rohirrim. The killing is remembered as the standard of the Northern Men’s dragon-doom: like Glaurung’s death, it is a deed of the “dragon-slayers” that later ages measured themselves against.
Significance
Scatha keeps the line of the First Age dragons (from Glaurung and Ancalagon) alive into the later tales — the last named great worm of the North whose hoard and slaying carry the myth of the dragon into the world of Men, two ages after Morgoth.
