Tar-Ancalimë
the first Ruling Queen of Númenor; daughter of Tar-Aldarion
Lineage and Rule
Tar-Ancalimë was the daughter of Tar-Aldarion the Ship-king and Erendis the Mariner’s Wife — the first of the ruling queens of Númenor, who took the sceptre after her father’s long reign. Under the line of Elros the rule of women was established by necessity: alone among the heirs, she carried on the kingship.
Significance
The accession of Tar-Ancalimë set the precedent that the Sceptre might descend in the female line, a law of the later Númenórean succession; her reign (and her mother’s tale, the tragedy of Erendis) is one of the great human histories of the island in the Second Age.
