The Text

The Ambarkanta (‘the Shape of the World’) is the cosmological essay-book of the legendarium, surviving in many forms — the accounts of the making of Arda, the walls and the seas, the lamps of the north and the turning of the earth, preserved with diagrams in The History of Middle-earth, vol. 4.

The Doctrine

In it the round-world and flat-world versions of the older cosmogony are set side by side, as the wise were long uncertain whether the world was flat and girdled by the Vaiya, or round and age-shaped — ‘all versions are history’ in the manner of this book.
