Names

The Elessar — “the Elfstone” — a green jewel whose light was taken from the Sun, shining with an inner radiance. In the later tradition the name was taken up by Aragorn as the crown-name of his kingship, “Elessar”, the Elfstone.

Description

The Elessar was a round stone of green hue, wrought in a golden (or silver) frame, holding within it the light of the Sun and giving to the wearer keepsake of the green earth. By tradition it was a stone of healing: made for the mending of wounds and grief, and by its virtue grass and blossom grew where its bearer passed.

History

Two strands are told of the Elfstone:

  • The early tale — the Elfstone of Gondolin: in the elder account the green stone was made in Gondolin by the jewel-smiths of the Noldor, from the light of the Sun uttered by the Valar, and borne by Eärendil the Mariner — the green stone of Eärendil, even as the Star of Eärendil carried the Silmaril of light.
  • The later tale — the jewel of Aragorn: in this account (per the later tradition of the house of Celebrimbor) the Elfstone passed through the ladies of the Noldor — of Galadriel’s realm — until it was given to Arwen, and by her to Aragorn as the token of their troth. It was as the bearer of the Elfstone that Aragorn took the name Elessar at his crowning, and by its remembered virtue he was called the “Healer’s Hand” among the men of the West.
