Definition

The Long Peace — the — is the long age of relative peace in Beleriand after the Dagor Aglareb and before the Dagor Bragollach: the years (c. Y.S. 60–455) in which the victorious Noldor held the Siege of Angband — barring the passes, fencing the Enemy in the North — and the realms of the Elves grew in security and splendor.

The Character of the Age

  • The Siege: The armies of the West — the enemy’s strength was “hemmed”, his assaults “broken”; the “Rings of the Siege” — the Long Peace was the.
  • The flowering: In those quiet centuries the hidden kingdoms were built — Gondolin (the hidden city), Nargothrond, the halls of Doriath and the realm of Menegroth; the Edain came into Beleriand and were welcomed; and the craft, song and lore of the Eldar reached its height. Significance

The Long Peace is the golden afternoon of the Elder Days — the sunniness of the mythology’s “August”, against which the later wars and ruins are the tragic autumn; its virtues (the hidden cities, the friendships of the Edain) and its vices (the pride and sloth) set the terms of the entire second half of the age.
