The Quest of the Silmaril is the tale of how Beren and Lúthien won a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown — the bride-price set by Thingol — through love, song and the aid of Huan: the central quest-tale of the First Age, from which the whole later story of the jewel’s fates flows.
