The Sundering of the Elves

the kindreds of the Elvenkind: Eldar and Avari, Calaquendi and Moriquendi

genealogyelveseldaravarisindarnandorcalaquendimoriquendi

The Elves call themselves the Quendi, “the Speakers”; from them, on the long road of the Great Journey, the whole Elvenkind sundered. Elves of the Light (Calaquendi) are those who saw the Trees in Aman; Elves of the Darkness (Moriquendi) are the Avari and the Sindar, Nandor and Silvan folk who never beheld the Light.

Notes

  • The Eldar are the three great kindreds that began the Journey; the Avari would not go, and with Sindar, Nandor and Silvan they are the Moriquendi.
  • The whole history of the Sundering is told in the Great Journey of the Eldar.
