The Swan-ships
the ships of the Teleri; the beauty of Alqualondë
Nature and Making
The Swan-ships — “the ships of the Teleri”, the “swan-ships of the Swan-haven” — are the great white sea-barks of the Teleri of Alqualondë: “the… ships were… in the likeness of swans” — the Quenta: — they were “the most beautiful of all the ships” — built by the Teleri under Ossë’s teaching, each with curved prow, no sail (they were rowed) and — their glory the young age’s wonder, and the pride of the Sea-elves.
The Fate
- The Kinslaying: When the fleeing Noldor would cross the sea, Olwë refused the loan; and Fëanor’s hosts, in the The Kinslaying at Alqualondë, took the swan-ships by force, slaying the Teleri upon the water “unarmed” — the ships (laden with the grief) carried the Fëanorians out of Aman.
- The burning at Losgar: At the land of the Noldor’s first landing, Fëanor burned the swan-ships — “the greatest impiety” — leaving the other host to the Helcaraxë; the ships’ ruin (all save none) sealed the curse and the hatred of the Teleri ever after —.
Significance
The Swan-ships are the beauty-token of the Sea-elves whose seizure and burning binds the exile’s guilt — the physical instruments of the first Kinslaying and its aftermath, and thus among the most sorrow-tinged objects of the age: their white prow-forms echo (in Círdan’s later crafts) down to the Vingilot and the ships of the Havens.
