Name and Nature
Valaróma — “the horn of the Valar” — is the great horn of Oromë the Rider: the Valaróma was his war- and hunting-horn, whose sound was the summons of the Lord of the Hunt, echoing through the woods and mountains of the world.
In the Tale
- The summoning: When Oromë rode among the Elves (or in the deep woods of the wandering), its blast called his wild host (the hunts of the Vala) and gave heart to the free; in the accounts of the Awakening and the Great Journey its sound is the signal of the Vala’s presence and protection.
- The war-call: Against the creatures of Morgoth its blast was the terror of the wilds: — the Elf-friends’ songs recall it as the sound of hope and of the hunt.
Significance
Valaróma is the emblem of Oromë’s wild power — the horn whose voice is at once the terror of the hunted evil and the summons of the free wild; it rings all through the early legend as the myth’s “horn of the hunter-god”.
