Barad Eithel
the fortress of the Elves at the Eithel Sirion
Names
Barad Eithel — “the Fortress of the Spring” — the stronghold of the Noldor set over the Eithel Sirion.
Geography
Barad Eithel stood at the head of the Sirion, against the eastern end of the Ered Wethrin, commanding the defile where the spring of the great river lay. From it the way northward toward the plain of Ard-galen could be watched, and it guarded the approach into the hills of Hithlum.
History
Fingolfin built Barad Eithel as the chief defence of Hithlum on the east, the strongest of the fortresses that kept the Long Peace upon the northern marches; from it the watch was held over the levels of the north. When the Dagor Bragollach broke the peace and the plain was lost, the fortress about the spring still guarded the way, and after Fingolfin’s fall Fingon held the march from it until the disastrous retreat of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad; in the ruin of the age, with the fall of the northern realms, Barad Eithel passed away under the sea with the drowned land.
