Names

Eithel Sirion — the well (headspring) of Sirion — the name of the cold spring in the Ered Wethrin where the great river arose.

Geography

The Eithel Sirion lay at the eastern end of the Ered Wethrin, the Mountains of Shadow, where that range turned aside in the north of Beleriand. From its dark spring the Sirion flowed south; the great river ran from this source through the Fen of Serech and on into the heart of the land. Because the spring stood at the meeting of the mountain wall and the northern plain, its defile was a gateway between Ard-galen and the West.

History

Since the way at the spring was the approach from the northern marches into Hithlum, the Noldor made the Eithel defensible: Fingolfin built the fortress of Barad Eithel over against the spring, and his house kept watch upon the plain of the north. The well and its stronghold saw the breaking of the Long Peace in the Dagor Bragollach and the onset of the Nirnaeth, and with the fall of Beleriand at the end of the age the source of the Sirion was whelmed under the Sea.
