The Ered Wethrin

Name and Position

The Ered Wethrin — “the Mountains of Shadow” — is the great range that encloses Hithlum (the realm of the Noldor High Kings) on its north and west: a line of high, misty peaks that “shadowed” the northern marches, their passes (chief of them the “rivers’ gates” and the passes toward Ard-galen) were the keys of the North.

The Rampart of the West

  • The defence: The Ered Wethrin were the natural bulwark of Hithlum and Dor-lómin — the barrier between the enemy’s north and the West’s realms; through their defiles (kept by Fingolfin’s and Fingon’s folk and the lords of Dor-lómin) the orc-armies had to force their way, and the great battles of the age were fought before or among their feet.
  • The mist: Their name symbolizes the veil of mist that the land of the Noldor’s watch kept between the light and the shadow.

Significance

The Mountains of Shadow, with the Anfauglith and the Ered Gorgoroth, framed the tragic geography of the North — the rampart which, once the Enemy mastered it (in the Bragollach), his armies poured over, and which was drowned with Beleriand at the age’s end.
