Names

Eithel Ivrin — the spring of Ivrin — also called the Pools of Ivrin. The name is used for the fountain-source of the river Narog and for the cold pools that the water gathered below it.

Geography

The Eithel Ivrin lay among the deep southern glens of the Ered Wethrin, beneath the shadow of the mountains, where the Narog rose. From the fountains and pools the swift Narog ran down through the lands of West Beleriand to the falls where Nargothrond was delved.

History

The Narog was born of the fountains of Ivrin; and it was said of these waters that the power of Ulmo ran in them, so that the water of Ivrin had virtue to heal weariness and sorrow. The pools are remembered chiefly for the healing of Túrin: after the slaying of Beleg, Gwindor led Túrin to the Pools of Ivrin, and there the madness of his grief was washed away and he was recovered. With the ruin of the north at the end of the First Age the Ered Wethrin were wasted, and the fountains passed beneath the sea with the drowned land.
