Names

The Fords of Brithiach — the name of the wide, shallow crossing of the upper Sirion, below its source and the Fen of Serech.

Geography

Below the Eithel Sirion and the Fen of Serech, where the river of the north ran down out of the mountains, the Sirion spread wide and could be forded; this was the Fords of Brithiach. The ford lay on the way that led from the northern marches into the lands beyond, and the river could be passed there more easily than elsewhere in its upper course.

History

The Fords of Brithiach were the great crossing of the upper Sirion, by which travellers and fugitives went south out of the marches of the north; Tuor came over them on his long way from Nevrast toward the hidden valley of Gondolin. In the last years of the age the ford, like the Fen of Serech above it, was swallowed by the sea that covered Beleriand.
