Berúthiel
the Queen Berúthiel; the cats of the queen of Gondor
Name and Role
Berúthiel, called the Queen Berúthiel, was a queen of Gondor, the wife of Tarannon Falastur, the twelfth King of the realm. The marriage was ill-fated: she was a dark and secret woman who hated and was hated, and the short legend of her remembers her chiefly by her cats — nine black cats and a white one, which she kept and which, it was said, served her as spies and eyes throughout the city. Her fame in Gondor became a byword for the unnatural and the ill-omened.
Her End
Tarannon at last put her away, casting her out with her cats (it is told that wherever one cat of hers went, others would follow), and her name passed, a dark jest and a warning, into the memories of the South-kingdom. The fragment that survives of her is all that is known; she plays no part in the War of the Ring.
