Draugluin
the father of werewolves; the wolf-lord of Sauron
Name and Being
Draugluin — the “father of the werewolves”, the great wolf whom Sauron kept as the lord of his wolf-kind — “the father of werewolves” — the Quenta: “Draugluin, sire of werewolves” — the mightiest of the wolf-creatures of Tol-in-Gaurhoth.
The End at the Isle
In the tale of the great rescue: when Lúthien sang before the Isle of Werewolves and Sauron sent forth his wolf-lord to attack, Huan the hound of Valinor closed with Draugluin and slew him upon the shore — the Quenta: — his dying word (in the Lay) warned Sauron that — and his death broke the arewolf-host’s powers — after his fall, Sauron himself came out — to his own doom against Huan.
Significance
Draugluin is the “wolf-king” whose death is the turning of the tale — the defeated captain whose fall exposes Sauron to Huan and Lúthien, and whose name is the myth’s byword for the werewolf-kind of the Enemy.
