Werewolves
the wolf-spirits; the beasts of Sauron
Name and Nature
Werewolves are the great wolves of the Enemy — wolf-kind possessed or bred with dark spirits, ruled by Sauron, “the werewolf-lord”. Their wolf-lord was Draugluin, and the chief of their pack was the great Carcharoth; through Sauron’s isle they were the dread of the ways and prisons of the First Age.
In the Tale
- The Isle of Werewolves: In Sauron’s tower (Tol-in-Gaurhoth), the captives “were devoured by the werewolves” — and the dungeon’s special terror; Huan came as “the wolf-hound, the master of wolves”, whom the werewolves could not harm.
Significance
The werewolves are the Enemy’s “wild army” of the First Age — the wolf-might of Angband through which Sauron tortures and through which (with Carcharoth) the Silmaril’s teeth and Huan’s great doom are done; they are the images of the age’s darkness made pack and howl.
