Eärwen
the Telerin lady; wife of Finarfin; mother of Galadriel
Name and Lineage
Eärwen — “the Sea-fair” — the daughter of Olwë, King of the Teleri at Alqualondë; the wife of Finarfin and mother of Finrod, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel. Her marriage was the seal of the friendship between the Noldor and the sea-elves: “the first joining” — the blood of the Teleri entered the line of the highest house of the Noldor, giving the House of Finarfin its silver hair, its love of the sea, and its resistance to the cruelty of the exile.
In the Tale
Eärwen appears almost only in the genealogies.
But her position is decisive:
- She is the reason the House of Finarfin had no part in the Kinslaying at Alqualondë — the Noldor of that house did not lift swords against their own kin — (Finrod’s host was the rearguard and refused) — she is the human (elven) face of the “wrong” done to her people.
- Through Finrod’s line — and above all through Galadriel, whose silver hair “caught the light of the stars and the glint of the seas”, her Telerin beauty becomes one of the great images of the legendarium.
Significance
Eärwen is one of the “forgotten women” whose absence from the text is itself eloquent: the mother who gave the wisest house its sea-light, and who is bereft of all her children — the Telerin princess who outlives, in Aman’s quiet, the wreck of her kindreds’ story elsewhere.
