Angrod
lord of Dorthonion; the fair-spoken prince
Name and Lineage
Angrod — son of Finarfin and Eärwen, brother of Finrod and Aegnor (and of Galadriel), husband of the Elvish lady Eldalótë and father of Orodreth. In the opposition to the Kinslaying he was of the wiser party: the Quenta records that Angrod (with Aegnor) — they were among the Noldor who refused the unlawful oaths — their opposition to the kinslaying is noted.
Life
- Dorthonion: With his brother Aegnor, Angrod held the pine-forest of Dorthonion, the terrible Highland between the passes of the north — “the most perilous march” — the pillars of the Long Peace. His daughter Orodreth (per the late genealogies) succeeded Finrod at Nargothrond.
- The warning ignored: When it was announced at Thingol’s court that the Oath was sworn — it was Angrod who (at the council of the Eldar) reported the words of the Fëanorians and the growing belief in the enmity — his plain speech brought the knowledge that poisoned the alliance.
- The death: In the Dagor Bragollach (the fourth great battle, the “Battle of Sudden Flame”), when Glaurung’s fire devoured the lands, Angrod and Aegnor — chosen by duty to hold the retreat — were slain. — they died, the two brothers fell in the — the plain deed: they stood with their doomed people and died at last, “the lords of Dorthonion, both slain”.
Significance
Angrod is the solid, plain-spoken prince of the “good” house — the brother through whom the word of the kinslaying passes, the father of the last king of Nargothrond, and the name among the first of the great fallen on the day the Long Peace broke.
