Dorthonion

Name and Position

Dorthonion — “the land of pines” — is the great highland of northern Beleriand, the “pine-forest of the north”, lying between the passes that lead to Angband and the mountains of the Ered Wethrin: a cold, tall highland forest, the shield of the south against the Enemy.

The Realm and the Ruin

  • The lords: It was held by Angrod and Aegnor of the House of Finarfin (who built their holds upon its heights), one of the chief bulwarks of the Long Peace; the outlying lordship of Ladros was given to the men of Bëor.
  • The ruin: In the Dagor Bragollach the fires from Thangorodrim and the dragon Glaurung burned over the highland — the lords were slain; and Dorthonion became Taur-nu-Fuin, “the forest under night” (a haunt of the shadow), where the last outlaws (Barahir, then Beren) kept their doomed defence.

Significance

Dorthonion is the emblem of the northern frontier of the Free Peoples — the pine-heights whose fall (in the Bragollach) opened the age’s disasters, and whose dark afterlife (Taur-nu-Fuin) carried the shadow deep into the later tales (Tuor’s night in the woods, the Orc-marches).
