Emeldir
the Manhearted; the mother of Beren
Name and Story
Emeldir — “the Manhearted” — the wife of Barahir and mother of Beren. When the doom of Dorthonion fell (the war and the outlawing of her husband’s house), and the women of the House of Bëor were broken, Emeldir took up the sword and led the remnant of the women and children of her people through the passes, fighting their way out to the safety of the south — the Quenta: — she is the rare fighting-mother of the Edain, remembered among the great women for whom.
Significance
Emeldir is one of the few named women-soldiers of the annals of Men — the mother who chose her people over her home, whose courage (with Barahir’s ring) framed the early days of the greatest of the house of Bëor’s sons. Her part is brief but the Quenta keeps her name for it.
