The Ered Gorgoroth
Name and Place
The Ered Gorgoroth — “the Mountains of Terror” — is the great range in the south of the shadow-land of the North: the peaks, looming under the black and evil Valleys of Dreadful Death (Nan Dungortheb), where the spiders of Ungoliant bred and the darkness was thick. The way of the fugitives (Tuor’s road, the birds’ dread) lay through or under their shadow, and no Elvish host dared them lightly.
