Names

Dor Dínen — “the Silent Land” — the name of the abandoned region that lay between the rivers Mindeb and Esgalduin.

Geography

Dor Dínen was a narrow region of the north marches, bounded by the Mindeb on the west and the Esgalduin on the east, under the southern skirts of the Ered Gorgoroth and above the valley of dreadful death, Nan Dungortheb. It lay at the edge of the lands that Doriath held watch over, an unpeopled waste between the hidden kingdom and the mountains of the Enemy.

History

The Silent Land was given its name because no living things dwelt there: it had been emptied in the wars and perils of the age, and its emptiness and silence were its terror. It served as a lonely march upon Doriath’s borders, and the way through its desolation (by the Pass of Anach and the approaches to Nan Dungortheb) was avoided by all but the lost and the evil. With the end of the First Age it was drowned with the rest of Beleriand.
