Names

Anach — the name of the mountain pass (the Pass of Anach) south of Dimbar, the way toward the Valley of Dreadful Death.

Geography

The Pass of Anach was a narrow defile in the mountains south of Dimbar, among the threatening heights at the skirts of the Ered Gorgoroth, the Mountains of Terror. It led from the land of Dimbar toward Nan Dungortheb, the dread valley that lay at the feet of those mountains, and so stood on the outer edge of the regions that Border Doriath on the north.

History

The pass was a perilous and lonesome road of the north marches, haunted by the evil that came down from the mountains; it was a way for the servants of Morgoth passing against the lands of the West, and figures in the accounts of the wars of the northern frontier and of the wanderings of the fugitives and outlaws of that age. With the ruin of the north at the end of the First Age it was destroyed in the breaking of the mountains.
