The Esgalduin
the river under shade; the river of Doriath
Names
The Esgalduin, the “river under shade”, was the chief river of the forest-realm of Doriath.
Geography
The Esgalduin rose amid the dark heights of the Ered Gorgoroth, from the Shadowy Spring, and flowed southwestward to meet the Sirion upon the western borders of Doriath. It marked the boundary between the two great forests of the realm, Neldoreth and Region; between its upper course and that of the river Aros lay the silent land of Dor Dínen.
History
Within the wood upon the course of the Esgalduin, Menegroth, the Thousand Caves of Thingol, was delved; and the river’s dark waters ran past its gates, and were woven into the grief of Lúthien.
