Names
The Ered Engrin, the Iron Mountains, are the great wall of the far north of Middle-earth.
Geography
An immense range that ran almost from one shore of the northern lands to the other, the Iron Mountains came in the west near to the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains) and in the east to the Orocarni; north of the range lay the regions of everlasting cold.
History
Melkor raised the Iron Mountains in the ancient days as a fence for his first fortress of Utumno; beneath the range his great holds of Utumno and Angband were made. In the wars between the Valar and Melkor the mountains were distorted, and at the breaking of the north at the end of the the Iron Mountains west of Beleriand were rent and vanished.
