Name and Nature

Helcaraxë — “the Grinding Ice” — is the terrible frozen waste of the far North that separates Aman (and its northern wilderness of Araman) from Middle-earth: — the Quenta: “the Grinding Ice… the awful chasm… between the two lands” — the — a region of grinding pack-ice, "wind and cold… une and the shadow of… " — the grimness of the far north, it is the “Helcaraxë” of the geography, where the two continents near across the frozen seas.

The Crossing of the Noldor

  • The ordeal: When Fëanor burned the swan-ships at Losgar, the hosts of Fingolfin and Finarfin were left far north in the waste; rather than return in shame, they crossed the Grinding Ice — “the most terrible of the journeys” — the Quenta: — a passage of years, of deaths.
  • The lost: Among the dead was Elenwë, the wife of Turgon (drowned in the ice); and the first battle of the exiles in Middle-earth (at Lammoth, where Argon fell) came at the journey’s end, when the sun first rose over the world. The crossing is the source of the Fëanorians’ deepest shame and of the Noldor’s tragic greatness.

Significance

Helcaraxë is the testing-waste of the myth — the “Grinding Ice” through which the virtuous third of the Noldor redeemed (in courage) the folly of the Oath’s impatience; its cold and terror are the physical embodiment of the exiled condition between the two worlds — and its crossing is one of the great deeds of endurance of the age.
