Name and Place

Ilmarin — the “mansions of the air”: the halls of Manwë and Varda on the summit of Taniquetil, the highest of the mountains, in the eternal snow and the thin clear air above the world. The Valaquenta: Manwë — the “halls of the air”, it is the “high city” — the Quenta: — the seat of the King of Arda and the Star-queen.

The Court of the Elder King

  • The bishops of the winds: From Ilmarin Manwë sees and rules the weathers and the courses; Varda with him “made the stars” — the two sit together “upon the eternal snows”; and their servants (Eönwë the herald, Ilmarë the handmaid) keep the court of the highest of all powers.
  • The sign and the light: The halls hold the ancient emblems (the sign of the One, the light of the stars), and from the gate of Ilmarin the kings of the Valar looked forth — in the images of the mythology, Ilmarin is the place above all weather where the Great Music is still heard as wind.

Significance

Ilmarin is the “high throne” image of the mythology — the aery palace at the top of the world, symbol of Manwë’s kingship and of the “nearness to Eru” that no other place holds; its cold clear height is the antithesis of the sunless pits of Angband.
