Morgoth's Ring
the chronicle of the elder myth in The History of Middle-earth, vol. 10
The Volume
Morgoth’s Ring is the tenth volume of The History of Middle-earth, containing Christopher’s editing of the final texts of the First Age: the ‘Later Quenta Silmarillion’, the Laws and Customs among the Eldar, the Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth (the debate of Finrod and Andreth), and the tale of the Darkening of Valinor.
The Themes
Its great theme is the making and breaking of the world — the marring of Arda by the shadow of Morgoth (his ‘ring’, the corruption of all things), the mortality of Men, and the sorrows of the Elves — and it stands as one of the deepest of the edited ‘lore-leaves’ of the legendarium.
