The War of the Jewels

HoME 11 — the later Annals and Quenta of the First Age, the Wanderings of Húrin, and Quendi and Eldar

texthomewar of the jewelsfirst age

Nature

Volume 11 of The History of Middle-earth, holding the late First Age chronicles: the last annalistic and Quenta forms, the fullest text of the Wanderings of Húrin, and the great appendix Quendi and Eldar on the Elvish tongues and the origin of the names of the kindreds. It is the direct successor to Morgoth’s Ring (HoME 10) in the series’ account of the “second phase” of the mythology.

Contents

  • The Grey Annals (Grey Annals) — the year-by-year chronicle of the Wars of Beleriand
  • The Later Quenta Silmarillion — including the late text “Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad”
  • The Wanderings of Húrin — the continuation of the Túrin story after the Nirnaeth
  • Quendi and Eldar — the great essay on the Elvish tongues and the word-histories of the names of the seven kindreds

Christopher Tolkien prints and compares every passage against the published Silmarillion.

Composition

The Grey Annals and the later Quenta come from the 1950s, after the completion of The Lord of the Rings had freed Tolkien to return to the First Age; the Wanderings of Húrin and the Quendi and Eldar papers are among his last great undertakings on the old legends. The editorial work established, with the Annals of Aman and Morgoth’s Ring, the whole late annalistic and philosophical stratum of the legendarium.
