Composition

The chapters come from the 1950s-1960s, much of it prepared for a revised edition of The Lord of the Rings and the expansion of its appendices; Christopher Tolkien printed them with commentary and connected them to the corresponding Unfinished Tales and Silmarillion texts, closing the twelve-volume series.
