Nivrim

the west-march wood of Doriath across the Teiglin

placeforestnivrimdoriath

Names

Nivrim — the name of the wood of Doriath that lay west of the river Teiglin.

Geography

Nivrim was the strip of woodland on the western march of Doriath, cut off from the main forest by the waters of the Teiglin, yet still a part of the kingdom of Thingol and still within the power of the Girdle of Melian, so that no foe could pass its borders while the enchantment stood.

History

Little of its tale is recorded in the histories: it is remembered only as the west-march wood, a guarded and lonely fringe of the Hidden Kingdom across the river. With the ruin of Doriath in the closing years of the First Age the realm was broken, the Girdle was overrun, and Nivrim, like all the land, was lost in the War of Wrath and drowned.
