Quenta 14 — Of Beleriand and its Realms
Chapter 14 of the Quenta Silmarillion
Summary
In the years of the Long Peace, the Noldor and Sindar divided all Beleriand among them, and the chapter is the great gazetteer of that division, naming the land and its rivers from the Sirion to the Gelion and beyond to the Ered Luin. Fingolfin held Hithlum and Dor-lómin in the north-west; the sons of Fëanor held the east marches from Himring and Himlad, warding the passes against Angband. Doriath remained the guarded realm of Thingol within the Girdle of Melian, while Ossiriand in the east was the land of the Green-elves, and the Falas the shore-realm of Círdan. Finrod delved his caverns of Nargothrond beneath the falls of the Narog, and built the watch-tower of Tol Sirion; Turgon dwelt for a while in Nevrast before seeking the hidden vale. The Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost kept their ancient homes under the Ered Luin, and their friendship with the Eldar was renewed. The chapter closes with the marshalling of all the peoples of Beleriand under their lords, the shadow yet afar.
