Names

Rómenna, meaning “eastwards” (towards the dawn), is the name of the greatest seaport of Númenor.

Geography

Rómenna stood in the region of Arandor, about fifty miles east of Armenelos, on the south side of the Firth of Rómenna, which opened into the Bay of Rómenna and so to the Sea. The great road beginning at Rómenna ran past Armenelos and the Meneltarma to Andúnië in the west.

History

Here were the largest shipyards of Númenor, and the most skilled shipwrights of the island; the mariner Vëantur had his house with its own quay in the port, and Tar-Aldarion long kept his ships in the harbour. Late in the island’s history the King’s Men forced the Faithful from Andúnië to Rómenna, to keep them under watch; and at the Downfall of S.A. 3319 the ships of Elendil and his sons sailed from Rómenna to Middle-earth.
