Names

Andúnië, from the Quenya word meaning “sunset”, is the name of the chief haven of the western lands of Númenor.

Geography

The city lay upon the Bay of Andúnië in Andustar, at the western end of the isle; part of it stood beside the shore and part climbed the steep slopes behind. The great road of the land ran from Rómenna in the east through Armenelos and past the Meneltarma to Andúnië.

History

Because the Elves of Tol Eressëa were at first wont to visit it, Andúnië was the greatest city of Númenor. Tar-Elendil created the lordship of Andúnië for his grandson Valandil, and the Lords of Andúnië, a distaff branch of the line of Elros, became the leaders of the Faithful, friends of the Eldar. As the shadow fell upon the island, the King’s Men ousted them; Amandil, the last lord, sailed west into the sea and was lost, and his line came down to Elendil. Andúnië was swallowed in the Downfall of S.A. 3319.
