Tar-Palantír
the Farsighted; the twenty-fourth and penultimate King of Númenor
Names and Titles
Tar-Palantír — “the Farsighted” — called in Adûnaic Inziladûn, was the twenty-fourth ruler of Númenor, the son of Ar-Gimilzôr, and the last king of the old and loyal faith. His daughter was Míriel, and his nephew and successor in the kingship was Ar-Pharazôn.
Life
Tar-Palantír was born in S.A. 3035. His mother Inzilbêth was of the lords of Andúnië, of the party of The Faithful, and her son repented of the ways of his father and ruled in the manner of the kings of old, taking his name again in the Elvish tongue and looking toward the West in hope that the shadow would pass. But his repentance could not avail against the evil that had grown in Númenor.
The Seizing of the Sceptre
Tar-Palantír held the Sceptre from S.A. 3177 to 3255. When he died, his daughter Míriel should have become the Ruling Queen in her right; but her cousin Ar-Pharazôn seized the Sceptre and wedded her against her will, and so the last hope of the old kingship failed.
Significance
Tar-Palantír is the penitent king of Númenor, the last to stand with the Faithful against the worship of the Dark; his death leaves the kingship to Ar-Pharazôn, and so opens the last act that ends in the Downfall.
