Names

The Celon, “stream flowing down from heights”, is one of the lesser rivers of East Beleriand, spoken of as a “slender stream”.

Geography

The Celon rose in the highlands about Himring and flowed southwestward until it joined the Aros on the southern borders of Doriath. The woods of Nan Elmoth lay on its south-eastern bank, and the river marked the boundary between Himlad and Estolad.

History

In the years of darkness before the return of the Noldor the Orcs of Morgoth had camps between the Celon and the Gelion, whence they plundered East Beleriand. After the Noldor came, Celegorm and Curufin dwelt in Himlad north of the stream; and Finrod counselled the people of Bëor to settle upon its eastern banks, in the land called Estolad. In the Dagor Bragollach the Orcs came down the valley of the Celon toward Doriath.
