Definition
The mortality of Men — the ‘Gift of Men’ (the Doom of Men) — is the mystery at the heart of the mythology: Men die and pass beyond the circles of the world to the fate that the Valar (and even the Elves) do not know. In the framing lore, death is not a punishment but the Gift of Eru to the Followers — the release and the door — and the great contrast to the Elves’ long life in the world.
