The House of Finwë
the Noldor and the three great houses of the Elven-kings
The Noldor are the second kindred of the Eldar, the “Deep Elves”, whose elder line descends from Finwë, the prince who led them from Cuiviénen. Of his two marriages came the three great houses of the exiles — the houses of Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin — shown here as one tree. In the diagrams, ✕ joins a married couple; the arrows show descent to the next generation.
The House of Fëanor
The eldest and most terrible of the houses: the seven sons whom Fëanor and Nerdanel begat, bound by the Oath to recover the Silmarils.
The House of Fingolfin
The royal house of the High Kings, carried from Fingolfin through Fingon and Turgon of Gondolin to the Half-elven.
The House of Finarfin
The golden and the wise house, wed to the Teleri through Eärwen, whose blood reached Elrond’s line through Galadriel and Celebrían.
Notes
- The three branches met again in the Half-elven line: through Idril (Fingolfin’s line) and through Arwen (Finarfin’s line); through the Oath the house of Fëanor stood apart and was undone.
- Amrod and Amras were twins, the youngest of Fëanor’s sons; Orodreth appears as Angrod’s son in one tradition, as Finrod’s in another.
