Vairë the Weaver
Names and Title
Vairë — “the Weaver”. She is wife of Námo (Mandos) and dwells with him in the Halls of Mandos.
Dominion and Character
The Valaquenta records of her: “she weaves all things that have ever been in time, with her hands, and the houses of Mandos are woven over with her tapestries, and they are as the story of the history of the world.” Her weaving is thus the visible memorial of everything that happens in Arda — the tapestry of fate, the record against which the Doomsman judges. She is one of the least-drawn of the Valar, but her iconography is precise: the threads she weaves are the destinies of the Children and the deeds of the Valar, gathered and kept. In the later philosophy of the Morgoth’s Ring essays she is linked to the theme that the history of Arda is a single ordered fabric — nothing is lost, nothing unremembered, “for in the mind of Eru nothing that is made is ever wholly done”.
In the Texts
Vairë appears almost solely in the Valaquenta; she is mentioned once more in the Quenta when her halls are named among the dwellings of Valinor. Tolkien never developed her in the histories, and Christopher Tolkien notes that she was “one of the Valier who never entered the tales at all” — a deliberate austerity on the author’s part.
